WASHINGTON: US State Department on Thursday expressed sympathies over the killing of popular qawwal Amjad Sabri, saying such senseless acts violate the fundamental freedom of expression, religion and belief.
“The arts have long been a forum for new ideas for fighting against intolerance. And again, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the people of Pakistan,” spokesperson John Kirby told a regular briefing in Washington.
Sabri was gunned down in Karachi on Wednesday when he was on his way to a local TV station for appearance. Amjad Sabri was son of famous Qawalli singer, late Ghulam Farid Sabri.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered an investigation into the attack and also announced Rs 10 million in financial support to the family of the singer.
The federal government will also bear expenses for the education of Amjad Sabri children.
